Darlene, Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez, and his wonderful rescue dog, Dukes. Albuquerque is The Duke City, hence the dog's royal name.

Darlene says, " Dukes is a sweetheart and the Mayor has his heart in the right place. I'd vote for him - but I don't live there!"

Darlene visited Albuquerque Animal Welfare for a tour of the Eastside Shelter, and to present her latest book, "Rover, Get Off Her Leg!" to Animal Welfare Director Jeanine L. Patterson.

Most of my friends win ribbons for their dogs or cats. My incredibly talented friend, Ronni Ashcroft, wins for her art. Of course, she's also a gifted writer.
When I was in Albuquerque, she was in a juried show in Los Alamos. Of course, Ronni's dog, Lou Gehrig and her son Adam's dog, James, are loved to pieces. Did you think I'd have friends who didn't love animals?!

Darlene also appeared on the CBS-TV local morning news on KRQE-TV in New Mexico with anchorman, Mike Powers, and answered viewer questions.
Accompanying Darlene to KRQE was Ms. Kate Winters, an 11-year-old rescue Toy Poodle owned and loved by award-winning writer and animal rescue activist, Kari Winters.
